Today, I decided to interview Tom Clifford, who directs corporate videos. As you can see to stage right, there is a picture of Tom in his directors uniform (notice the hat). Tom is an award-winning filmmaker and he thinks remarkable organizations deserve remarkable videos. For 23 years, Tom has been helping companies tell their story by producing award-winning remarkable documentary videos. Companies from Fortune 500s to non-profits use his films for marketing, recruiting and retention, sharing corporate values and more. From CEOs to the front-line, Tom makes people feel comfortable being in front of the camera. _____ Me: What are 3 ways youve branded yourself as a director online? Tom: The first, and foremost, is through my blog, Bringing Brands to Life! I remember in the summer of 2006, scouring the web looking for blogs, not static sites, from other corporate filmmakers. I couldnt find any. That void prompted me to put a stake in the ground and start writing about my 20+ year experience as a corporate filmmaker. Bringing Brands to Life! has recently been picked up by Advertising Ages Power 150 List, so Im thrilled at this honor! Second, I created a Squidoo lens, Corporate Video: Is Yours Remarkable? Being a Seth Godin fan, I was first in line two years ago when he launched Squidoo. The lens continues to generate a lot of traffic to my blog and its one of the best moves one can make to start finding their voice on-line. That lens has really paid off. When searching corporate videos in Google, my Squidoo lens consistently appears high in the results, appearing around fourth or fifth, or at least in the top ten. Once a person lands on my lens, it points them right to my blog. Third, my LinkedIn profile has been extremely helpful in growing my network in ways Id never thought possible. Plus, creating a custom url of my LinkedIn profile usually puts my name on the first page of Google searches. Me: What brands need the most help in coming to life? Tom: In my own experience, Ive found that its brands that are trying to express and capture that invisible and human spirit in each of us. When companies talk about innovation, values, team spirit, caring, diversity, support and team work and such, video can show these qualities in action very clearly. Imagine hearing different employees sharing their personal points of view about these concepts while seeing them in action. The documentary format lends itself incredibly well to these ideas. Most times, its as real, authentic, emotional and engaging as possible. And just to clarify, I favor the documentary and real people approach only because this is how Ive been capturing stories for many years. Its not to say other forms and styles do not work. Me: You produce many videos, but which are the most successful? Are you looking to generate buzz by making a viral video? Tom: The most successful videos are ones capturing personal stories. It doesnt matter how small or large your organization is; an organization is made up of people. And people have stories. Since we are hard-wired to tell and share our stories to one another, it makes sense, to me anyways, to discover and capture those stories and feelings from an employees (or other) perspective. My approach is to capture one person or perhaps a few people to tell a company story. Ill look for diversity in the voices and diversity in the stories. These voices wind up creating an interesting video story; a story creating an emotional connection with the viewers. Viral videos? Think about this for a moment. Whats the first thing that happens when a video story fades to black? Silence. Talking. Conversation. Sharing. Whats viral? Talking and sharing, of course. Of course, new technologies enable more eyeballs to see these stories. But the premise remains the same: ignite conversation. In the end, Im interested in igniting conversations and sparking actionall aimed at helping clients solve problems or raise awareness about an issue. Me: What are your thoughts about production quality vs blogger podcast quality? Tom: Great question! 22 years ago, my mentor said something to me in the edit room which has never left me. He said, Id rather see a great story on paper than a poor story filmed in Panavision. So, capturing stories is in my DNA. Since every member of my team is first-rate, I honestly dont ever have to worry about quality. Its embedded in everything we do. My focus is always on the story and helping to move an audience to action. Why are we capturing this? What difference will this story make to those watching it? What happens when the video story fades to back? Who can tell this story? What emotions do we want to capture? These questions drive me in every project. With that said, blogger quality video certainly has a place and one Im all for embracing. Heres how I see it: in the end, all this new technology enables the sharing of our stories. And thats a great thing! Me: You own directortom.com, but not thomasclifford.com. What is your reasoning here? I know that youve branded yourself as director tom, but what about your real name? Tom: Well, that reminds me of a story that happened in the summer of 1999 I had dinner with a client after filming a full day and he said, You know, you should grab directortom dot com. Being busy producing, I never really followed up with the idea. But I always entertained the idea once and a while and Id often bounce the name off friends and clients to see their reaction. They all loved it..its easy to spell and easy to remember. Seven years later, when I started blogging, I remembered that dinner and grabbed the name. If I recall, my name had been taken, so its worked out well in the end. Nothing like a happy ending, right?

Happiness at work at Perrigo - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Health care company Perrigo is looking for more employees and this is how they try to attract them: Where many companies present themselves seriously and factually, Perrigo present themselves as a fun, lively, social place. I dont know about you but it kinda makes me want to work there :o) Here are the top three four reasons why Perrigos casting call is a great way to attract great people. 1: It speaks to your emotions Disney World does the same thing. Ive seen the video they use to present themselves to potential new employees and it contained exactly NO facts. Instead it was all about all the cool stuff Disney does from Monday Night Football to Pirates of the Caribbean to their Cruises. I saw this video with a group of highly paid consultants and leaders as part of a seminar at Disney University and after that 6-minute presentation, several of the group declared themselves ready to quit their careers and go work for Disney World :o) That is the power of speaking to peoples emotions! Where most companies try to speak to your logical, rational side, Perrigos video speaks directly to your emotions, which is more effective. Many studies in decision-making show that we make our decisions with our emotions and only then do we find the rational arguments to support our emotions. 2: Its fun Why does recruiting always have to be such a deadly serious process? In fact, studies show that we make better decisions when were happy and relaxed. Lets make it fun! 3: This video will instantly repel a ton of potential hires While many people will be attracted to Perrigo, many others will see this video and think I will never work for a company that silly. And thats a great thing because those people would obviously not fit in at an organization that is happy and fun-loving. Its much easier to let these people self-select early in the process than to have to read their applications and interview them (and possibly even hire them) only to find later that theyre a bad fit for the company culture. 4: Employees were involved in making it (Update) After I posted this, it struck me that this is especially cool because current employees could get in on the fun of making the video. 4 tips for dressing for your office Christmas party Feeling the pressure this party season? In this article, Steve Cochrane from luxury fashion retailer Psyche offers his advice for looking your best at your work’s Christmas event. It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Whether you’re Christmas-crazy or a bit of a grinch, you’ll no doubt be receiving your invitation to the office do soon, if you haven’t already. This is the perfect chance to bond with your co-workers and feel rewarded for all your hard work this year â€" as well as overdo it with the pigs in blankets and eggnog. But what will you wear? Work events can take many forms, and it can be difficult to know if you’re getting the tone right and striking the balance between festive and functional. So, if you want to look your best this holiday season, below I’ll be sharing my tips for looking good while celebrating Christmas with your colleagues. Formal corporate party Business events are quite common over the festive period as clients and other companies try to drum up a bit of extra custom and strengthen their existing relationships, ready for the upcoming new year. So, it’s important to make a good impression and make sure you’re not standing out for the wrong reasons. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t acknowledge the jolliness of the season, though â€" just look for your typical style of workwear with a festive edge, such as subtle metallic threads or patterns, rather than going straight to glitter or sequins. For men, stick to darker festive colours like burgundy and emerald green rather than anything too bright to get balance right. Party in the office If the party is at the office, it doesn’t make much sense to go home and get changed just to come back in. Your best bet is to wear something that’s appropriate for work during the day and then make it party-friendly in the evening. Think smart trousers and a button-down shirt, or an LBD you can dress up with sparkly shoes and accessories. Alternatively, you might want to consider bringing something that won’t crumple and crease in your bag if you’re planning on getting changed into your outfit at the end of the day. Thick fabrics like velvet or tweed are good for this, and they also happen to be very festive-looking materials. Christmas lunch or dinner Christmas lunches and dinners are probably some of the most relaxed office parties on this list, as everyone comes together, relaxes with a few drinks, and pulls a cracker or two. They can also be the trickiest to gauge fashion-wise, as you don’t want to be stuck wearing stuffy work clothes, but you don’t want to be overdressed in anything too fancy either. The answer to this predicament is to wear a pair of well-fitting designer jeans that aren’t faded or ripped. Gentlemen should throw on a neatly ironed t-shirt or shirt with their jeans that day. Ladies, it’s time for jeans and a nice top. Just make sure the waistband can accommodate a three-course turkey dinner! After work pub party This kind of party is where the fun can really begin. Which pub or bar (or club!) you’ll be going to really depends on the personalities of your co-workers and your office culture, but either way, events like these are a great excuse to wear something special. As you’re going ‘out-out’, you can afford to go a lot more glam with your outfit, so embrace anything sparkly or brightly coloured that you wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing anywhere else. Just remember to factor getting ready into your party outfit planning: as with an office party, you’ll have to figure out whether you’ll be bringing your outfit with you to work that day or if you’ll be popping home first to get changed. The tips in this article can help you decide what to wear at this year’s office Christmas party.
